DREAMS: How do we work?

Well, these days I´ve been thinking about Dreams and I asked myself. What are dreams? What is their fuction or purpose? And this way, I entered a closed loop of questions. I was really interested because it is a fact that happens every night inside our minds and so oneirology (the science that studies the dreams) must have something to do in our live. I made a presentation of it and I enjoyed so that I want to show you now.

I enjoy spleeping because my life takes another way...
First of all I will give you some infomation for you to now how this works: the sleeping fases, the brain activity while dreaming and then some hypothetical purposes.

Sleeping phases:

5 stages of the sleeping cicle
Easily explained, we have a sleeping cicle which has 5 stages. It is a 90-120 minute cicle that repeates all the time that you spent dreaming and so that´s why we have got many dreams. The first 4 stages are called the non REM sleep stages and the 5th one is called the REM sleep stage. REM means Rapid Eye Movement and it is the "time for dreams". A new research has shown that we can have dremas while we are in the other 4 stages but the NREM (non REM) dremas are not as intensive as the REM dreams.

 Brain activity:

Parts of the Brain

Our brain works harder in the REM sleep than while we are walking. But what are the parts activated while dreaming?

Mostly the cerebellum, but also the frontal lobe, the temporal lobe and the occipital lobe. The only one that is not activated is the parietal lobe.

Each part of our brain works for somenthing and I´m going to explain you the fuction of someones.
1)Cerebellum (basal ganglia): we percept movements and sensations of the "outside world".
Example: you may listen a song while you are sleeping and you will create a new caracter based on this music.
2) Visual associative cortex (Middle part of the occipital lobe): We construct images from personal associations.
Example: if we are scared about snakes and when we feel scared on a dream a snake can apear because we associate snakes to danger or fear.

3) Right Inf Partietal Cortex (Upper part of the occipital lobe): we construct an spatial image and an image of self.
Example: we see ourself at a particular place, maybe our bedroom.

4) Limbic, Amygdala (Centre of the brain): Emotional procesing place, we create images focused on anomalies and social self.
Example: when we are dreaming and we detect and error we change it, if it apears a dog without legs, we will put legs to the dog.

5)Left Inf Parietal Cortex (the pons of the Brainstem): we dream imagery we don´t identify with the name of the images.
Example: When we create an avatar and it has no name but it exists r we create a spaceship or a weapon...

6)Stem and thalamus (Medulla of the Brainstem and Spinal cord) : Consciousness and Dream (REM) initiation; Rapid Eye Movement because you think you are awake.
Example: you move your eyes or speak while you are sleeping and it isn´t necesary.

3) Purpose

The purpose of the Dreams is still not entirely understood but there are lot of hypothesis and I will show you the most comon and accepted ones.

  • The first one says that dreaming helps to
Regulate
Analyze
Explain and
Remenber

recent events in our life and it´s because of this that the scientist say that dreaming is like a "mental housekeeping" process.

  • There is a second hypothesis which affirms that we dream to learn. We usually simulate theratening situations and work out how best to react. It is a way of gearing up for danger situations.
Example: We see ourselfs surrounded of snakes and we make fire to shoo them away.
Or maybe we are falling from a skyscraper and we reach a rope.

Then, there is another hypothesis which states that we dream to deal. It is said that we process complex situations and when we wake up, we are ready to see things in a more positive way. Also called a "re start".

There is nothing like a dream to create the future
-Victor Hugo

Well this is all I wanted to saw you about dreams and to come to an end, I will leave you this two pages about dreams. They a pages were you can check what you dreams mean, I found out really interesting. There are two because one is in Spanish and the other one in English. Thank you :)
